Week 5 digital reputation
Why is it important to be a good digital citizen?
It is important to be a good digital citizen so that you are aware of the potential hazards out there. There are online predators that seek out and take advantage of vulnerable young people. Children as well as adults need to be aware of this and take safety caution. Children also need to be aware of what personal information they may be displaying for the world to see, for example: telephone number, address, exct. It’s also good to be a good digital citizen to know how to deal with viruses that get on your computer and how to avoid them. Copyright and plagiarism issues also come up when you are dealing with the computer/internet. Everyone needs to know how to write citations properly and give credit where credit is due.
What values does a good digital reputation have?
Someone that has a good digital reputation, knows certain precautions to take, and doesn’t post any information that predators could contact them by. A person with a good digital reputation doesn’t post any pictures that others would find offensive, or post pictures that someone else wouldn’t want them posting. They don’t bash others on social networks and are careful about what they do post. They cite all information that they use from sources and know how to cite correctly. A person that values a good digital reputation knows that it affects their personal reputation as well.

Some of the simulations that I investigated at http://www.thinkport.org/Technology/simulations.tp were the History Wired, Student Materials, and Word Search Factory Lite. All of the simulations could be incorporated into teaching, but the two I think I would use the most are the History Wired, and the Word Search Factory Lite. I would incorporate the History Wired into a ton of different history lessons. This simulation has many different topics. I will be able to carry my students to the National Museum of American History by a simple click of a button. I can model the timeline on this site for my students and then let them create their own timeline. When talking about communications I can log on and show students what Alexander Graham Bells Large Box telephone looked like, to compare with what we use today. There are so many different ways to use this simulation. Another simulation I could incorporate into teaching would be the Word Search Factory Lite. I could create vocabulary worksheets to go along with spelling, or just simple vocabulary in reading, science of social studies. I would create word searches, and cross word puzzles that student would enjoy completing. It would be a fun way for students to learn their vocabulary. I could also use this simulation to help make out tests for the students. This is a great website full of useful simulations.

Google Reader Experience
The seven additional blogs I have been reading are:
1. CoolCatTeacher Blog- http://coolcatteacher.blogspot.com/
2.Will Richardson-- http://willrichardson.com/
3. Larry Ferlazzo’s Websites of the Day-- http://larryferlazzo.edublogs.org/
4.Free Technology for Teachers-- http://www.freetech4teachers.com/
5.A Media Specialist’s Guide to the Internet http://mediaspecialistsguide.blogspot.com/
6.Justin Tarte- Life as an Educator...- http://justintarte.blogspot.com/
7.Teacher Tom- http://teachertomsblog.blogspot.com/
My favorite blog is Justin Tarte's - Life as an Educator....I feel like I can relate with everything he is saying. He explains his post very well, adds videos/pictures/exct. to go along with them and post additional questions that make you think.
A summary from this blog that particularly caught my attention was one titled Do tests motivate students? Justin posted a video clip from Boy Meets World. That use to be an all time favorite of mine when I was younger! The video was actually discussing a topic that we as teachers are still dealing with today (what students need to do to show their mastery of content). He posted several questions that went along with the video that were really good ones to consider. I enjoyed reading his blog and felt like he made several good points!
Google Reader is a great way to discover new teaching methods and stay updated on whats going on in the world of Education. I love it!
